About Our Elk Meat
Our elk are naturally raised on rotated pastures of grass and alfalfa. They drink from the same water supply that we do. During the winter we feed them alfalfa/grass mix hay and they always have free choice salt and mineral supplement available. We do not feed our elk commercial feeds or grain. They do not receive growth hormones, anit-biotics, steroids, or animal by-product feeds.
Our calves are born ouside in a natural environment on sun-sanitised grass. They are raised by their mothers and "aunts" in the "nursery" group. They stay with their mothers until late fall after the breeding season, when it is the natural time that elk calves are weaned. When we wean them they are separated only by a fence allowing nose-to-nose and visual contact. This greatly reduces the stress on all of the animals and the calves quickly adjust.
We keep a closed herd here raising up our own replacement broodstock.
There are no row-crops being raised on neighboring properties so chemical drift is not a concern here.
When it is time to harvest, our animals are taken to slaughter in very small groups. This helps to minimise the stress on them.
